Long-stay travel insurance

Are you going away for a while, either for an extended holiday, or to study or work overseas? Then you definitely need travel insurance.

These days more and more people are travelling overseas and the duration of stay is ever increasing. Some just take a longer holiday or go to stay with relatives on the other side of the world. However, the most popular type of long-stay holiday is that enjoyed by young people, especially young university students. After school or university exams finish, many students like to drop everything and take a gap year.

A gap year is a year away from studies, or a year seeing the world before taking up permanent employment back home. Many young people like to try backpacking in different countries, often third world countries, or settle for a few months to work in a country on the other side of the world. These days, backpackers have become more and more adventurous in the destinations they choose and in what they plan to do. This kind of travelling can be risky and every year many young people are injured, lose luggage or have flights cancelled.

If you are planning a long-stay holiday, you must ensure that you have sufficient insurance, especially to make sure that you are covered for health-related issues. Not every country has a public health system and, even if they do, free health is usually not available for foreign visitors, tourists or students.

Ask about special policies to cover your long-stay travel and backpacking holiday. This kind of policy should not only provide comprehensive insurance for a range of travelling activities, but should also ensure that you are covered if your plans have to be cancelled at the last minute. Make sure you’re insured should your camera or mp3 player be lost or damaged .Long-stay travel also often includes some aspect of adventure travel, so make sure that, whatever activity you plan during your stay, you are covered for any eventuality.

If you plan to study overseas for a few months or even a year or two, you will also need insurance. This is particularly important for students of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) who may be travelling to an English-speaking country to improve their knowledge of the language and culture.

Whatever kind of long-stay travel you are planning, make sure you have the correct travel insurance.
