Travel insurance for your peace of mind if your travel arrangements change

Travelling can be very stressful. We have all heard stories about holidaymakers who have had delays in their flights, who have unexpected stopovers, who have their flights diverted, or who find their flights or even their hotels have been double-booked. For your peace of mind, make sure you take out travel insurance that includes help or compensation when your travel arrangements change unexpectedly. Or, what about the skiing holiday you’ve been looking forward to, only to find that there has been no snow at your resort?

To be prepared for unexpected changes to your travel plans, you must take out travel insurance before you leave your own country. Travel insurance covers other things, such as illness or accident, loss or theft of your personal belongings and emergency repatriation, but one very important aspect of travel insurance is to cover for unexpected changes to your travel plans.

The European Union has recently issued a new travel directive. This says that you are entitled to claim compensation from the airline if you are denied boarding because of double-booking of seats, or if your flight is cancelled, or if there are long delays, or if your checked-in baggage is damaged, lost or delayed, or if injury or death results from an accident on a flight. You can also claim compensation from your tour operator if he fails to provide the services that you have booked. However, if you are travelling outside the European Union or are using a lesser-known airline, you would be wise to take out insurance to cover these circumstances.

If you are planning a winter sports holiday, such as skiing or snowboarding, you are also at the mercy of the weather. Sometimes there is not enough snow at your resort. Either you will not be able to ski at all, or you may need daily transport to travel to another resort. Sometimes there may even be too much snow with pistes closed because of the danger of an avalanche. In these cases, it pays to take out extra insurance to cover for these inconveniences. Similarly, other adventure sports may be affected by adverse weather conditions and you should check the insurance options for each of these.

If you have the right insurance, you can be confident that, should your travel plans unexpectedly change, you will be able to claim compensation.
