Travel insurance for your peace of mind if you have to cancel or cut short your holiday

You have been looking forward to your holiday for months and have made all the preparations when an unexpected event occurs that spoils your holiday plans; or you are already enjoying your holiday when unforeseen circumstances cause you to cut short your holiday. Make sure you have adequate insurance to cover these eventualities.

To be prepared for cancellation or emergency repatriation, you must take out travel insurance before you leave your own country. Travel insurance covers other things, such as illness or accident, loss or theft of your personal belongings and unexpected changes to your travel plans, but one very important aspect of travel insurance is to cover for cancellation or cutting short your holiday.

What if you have to cancel your holiday at a late date due to illness to yourself, or to a member of your family travelling with you? Or maybe another family member not travelling with you is too sick for you to leave them, or passes away just before you are ready to leave. Travel companies have differing conditions for penalties they will impose for cancellation, and the amount of money you will lose will depend on how late you make the cancellation. If you are not insured, however, you can be sure you will lose some, if not all, of your investment.

What if you, or one of your family members, are taken ill whilst on holiday or one of you breaks your leg on the ski slope? In some destinations the local hospital won’t have the resources to give you the proper care, or you may need extended treatment that will prove costly if you stay there. This will mean emergency repatriation and could be very expensive, especially if medical care is necessary on the journey home.

What about if you return to your hotel after a day sunbathing on the beach or an afternoon racing down the pistes, only to receive a phone call asking you to return home because of a family bereavement? Again, this could be costly for you and your family.

If you have the right insurance, you can be confident that, should your have to cancel or cut short your holiday, you will be able to claim adequate compensation.
